Interior Design - Kitchen KHW

We are New Tradition,
an Amsterdam based multi-disciplinary
Architecture and Interior Design studio,
founded by designer Rianne Toonen
and architect Juriaan Calis.

The mission of our design studio is simple:
to transform a space into the design of your dreams.
From creating architectural designs and facilitating
our customers with the right contractors,
to managing the complete construction.
From new builds and total renovations,
to small projects and extensions – everything is possible.
Full service projects are our speciality,
but we also assist with pre-purchase property advice
or guide our customers up to the construction phase
with a complete design and the necessary permits.

Welcome to our world.
Let’s go through how we work,
so that you’ll get a bit of an idea
of what will happen during your project,
as we transform your dreams into reality.

No two projects are the same,
just as no two clients are the same.
So describing our work process
and giving you insight into our
services will never give you the
whole story. It does however give
you a very clear idea about the
different phases we go through
during a project and what’s going
to happen next. Let’s go through them.

Interior Design - Bedroom KHW

1 – the First Meeting

First of all we listen.
We come to your project with open eyes,
ears and with honesty. We’ll get to know
what you like and discuss how feasible
it is, given your wishes, time and budget.

2 – the Quotation

Soon after the first meeting you’ll
receive a clear fixed-fee quotation
for our services in the design phase.
We’ll explain all the steps for your
specific project and all the services
that our design studio provides, so you know
what to expect from us during the project.
If you agree on the quotation and our
terms and conditions, we’ll sign a contract
together and officially start the project.

3 – the Brief

Now we’ll work out your design ambitions
even further. We’ll discuss your must-haves,
nice-to-haves and most-definitely-nots.
We’ll also explore the feasibility of the project
in relation to the technical aspects of the property,
the aspects of the surrounding site and the
rules regarding planning permission.

4 – the Sketch Design

After collecting all the measurements
we’ll develop layouts and begin to
investigate styles and finishes.
The first 3D visuals will be developed
and we’ll be thinking of how spaces will
feel, creating moodboards and coming
up with the first ideas for furniture.
Right now, it will all start to come alive.
Perhaps a bit rough around the edges,
but very much ready for our first design
meeting, where we feel and discuss
if we’re on the right track
and ready for the next phase.

5 – the Concept Design

We start with narrowing down the drawings to
a more detailed version, making sure that the
design is buildable, functional and beautiful.
We submit the planning application and get
all the necessary parties on board – e.g. the
construction engineer and the contractors.
The 3D impressions will become more detailed,
as colours and materials are selected.
And before we start with the technical work,
we’ll have a first meeting with the contractor to
discuss the preliminary cost estimating and
see if our design and budget are on track.

6 – the Technical Design

If adjustments are necessary to bring the project
in line with the construction budget or planning
application, it will be worked out at the start of
this phase. The final presentation for the technical
design will include a very detailed set of drawings
and 3D impressions that communicates the overall
layout and volume of the building or space, all
significant equipment, the type of material or finish
for every surface of the project and all the furniture,
lighting and styling selection.

7 – the Building Preparation

Before we introduce you to our network
of trusted builders, we’ll make a set of
construction documents. This will include
all the drawings and specifications of the
details, dimensions, and notes necessary
to communicate the entire design to the
builder. We’ll make clear how all the
building components must be connected,
specify all the materials, finishes, fixtures,
equipment and appliances to be installed.
We’ll coordinate our drawings with the
construction engineer’s, and so all parties
have enough information for the final pricing
and are ready to start building.

8 – the Construction

While most of our work is done before
this phase, our presence during the
construction phase is equally important.
During this phase we visit the site regularly
to answer questions from the builders
and proactively address potential issues.
It’s very important to have an eye on things
to ensure the finished project meets
everyone’s expectations. Occasionally
decisions must be made on the spot,
and our ability to work quickly to solve
problems is essential. At the end of this
phase, we’ll develop a final Punch List
to ensure the work is completed perfectly.
